About Red Kite Design

Red Kite Design was founded in 2018 by Steven de Rooij. With more than 30 years of experience in the development of complex electronics, Red Kite Design is a trusted partner for the specification, design and production of advanced electronic systems.

Before founding Red Kite Design, Steven contributed to projects in telecommunications, space and defense. These industries share one defining characteristic: highly specific and often unique requirements. Successfully delivering solutions in such environments requires a deep understanding of constraints, careful analysis, and a creative, open-minded approach to engineering — a combination that defines the way Red Kite Design operates.

Steven de Rooij holds a Master of Science degree in Electronics from Delft University of Technology and combines strong academic foundations with decades of hands-on experience.

Technologies & Expertise

Red Kite Design has experience across a wide range of technologies, environments and applications. This breadth of expertise enables the development of tailored solutions that meet the highest technical standards.

PCB Design

From simple 2-layer boards to complex multilayer designs up to 24 layers. Experience includes ENIG plating, silver immersion, HASL (leaded and lead-free), microvias, buried vias, via-in-pad, semi-rigid and flex designs, as well as high-Tg and low-loss materials.

Environments

Designs suitable for demanding conditions, including defense, space, automotive and security-sensitive applications. Solutions are built for indoor and outdoor use, moving systems, extreme temperatures, long lifetimes and telecommunications infrastructure.

Core Technologies

Experience includes laser optics, high-speed digital systems (up to 400 Gbit/s), switching power supplies, and memory interfaces such as DDR, QDR, SRAM, NAND and NOR.
Supported communication interfaces include RS232/422/485, I2C, SPI, One-Wire, USB and SMBus. Additional expertise includes stepper motors and LED drivers.

Programmable Logic

Extensive experience with FPGA and CPLD platforms including Xilinx (Kintex, Virtex, Artix), Intel/Altera (Stratix, Arria, Cyclone, MAX), Microsemi (IGLOO, SmartFusion) and Lattice (MachXO, LatticeXP).

Processors

Development experience with a wide range of microcontrollers and processors, including Microchip PIC16, AVR and ATSAM, STMicroelectronics STM32 (ARM), Marvell ARM-based systems, 8051 derivatives, and NXP PowerQUICC and ARM devices.

Power Supplies

Design of both isolated and non-isolated power supplies, including switching and linear solutions. Systems range from 1 mW to 250 W, and from 0.6 V to 400 V, with a strong focus on efficiency, stability and low noise.
